Le Bonheur Children's and UT Health Science Center Announce Dr. Bret Mettler Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Executive Co-Director of the Heart Institute

MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 17, 2024 ~ Le Bonheur Children's Hospital has recently announced the appointment of Dr. Bret A. Mettler as their new Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Executive Co-Director of the Heart Institute at Le Bonheur and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. In addition, Dr. Mettler will also hold The Susan and Alan Graf Endowed Chair in Pediatric Heart Surgery at Le Bonheur.

Dr. Mettler joins Le Bonheur and UT Health Science Center from Johns Hopkins Children's Center, where he currently serves as Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Co-Director of the Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center. Prior to his time at Johns Hopkins, he was the Director of Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

"His extensive knowledge and experience will be invaluable in continuing our mission to provide exceptional care for children with complex heart conditions."

Dr. Mettler specializes in surgical repair of complex congenital heart disease, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. He is also actively involved in research on complex congenital heart defects and the development of an artificial pulmonary valve using stem cells.

"I am honored to be a part of Le Bonheur's commitment to excellence in patient care," said Dr. Mettler. "The Heart Institute has a renowned faculty led by Drs. Knott-Craig and Towbin, and I am excited to contribute to their vision for growth and service to the community."

Dr. Mettler will be taking over the roles of Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Executive Co-Director of the Heart Institute from Dr. Christopher Knott-Craig, who announced his plans to step down last year. Along with Dr. Jeffrey A. Towbin, Executive Co-Director of the Heart Institute and Chief of Pediatric Heart Failure, Dr. Knott-Craig has led Le Bonheur's Heart Institute to become a Top 10 program in U.S. News & World Report. They have also been instrumental in developing the new 31-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

Originally from South Dakota, Dr. Mettler will be relocating to Memphis later this year with his wife Kelly and their two daughters.
