SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn., Jan. 9, 2025 ~ Sevier County, known for its scenic beauty and strong sense of community, is taking a proactive step towards enhancing the health and well-being of its residents. The county has engaged Blue Zones, a global leader in longevity research and community well-being transformation, to launch Blue Zones Ignite.
Blue Zones is renowned for its evidence-based approach to promoting healthy choices in the places where people spend the most time. Through this partnership, Blue Zones will work closely with Sevier County and community leaders to conduct a local assessment and develop a plan to make the county a healthier place to live, work, and thrive.
Mayor Larry Waters expressed his excitement about this initiative, stating that it aligns with the values that have always been important to the community. These include strong connections with family and friends, spending time outdoors, and taking pride in local arts and culture. By incorporating these traditions into the Blue Zones approach, Mayor Waters hopes to make it easier for residents to make positive choices that lead to longer, healthier, and happier lives.

The Sevier County government is also collaborating with the school system on the Blue Zones Ignite assessment. According to Stephanie Huskey, Director of Sevier County Schools, this partnership will further their mission of educating students beyond traditional academics. The Blue Zones model will help promote healthy lifestyle choices and habits among students so they can grow into fit, happy, and productive members of the community.
Cindy Ogle, former Gatlinburg City Manager and champion of this project in Sevier County, believes that partnering with Blue Zones will bring a comprehensive approach to improving the health and sustainability of residents. The assessment will identify strengths and resources within the county while also pinpointing areas where improvement projects can be implemented for maximum impact.
The Blue Zones approach is based on 25 years of research on longevity and happiness from some of the world's longest-living communities. By focusing on creating supportive environments rather than solely individual behavior change, Blue Zones has successfully transformed well-being in over 75 communities across the country. This approach has led to significant improvements in overall population health and well-being, including drops in obesity and smoking rates, economic growth, and measurable savings in healthcare costs.
