HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 29, 2024 ~ As September marks National Suicide Prevention Month, the Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is proud to recognize and support this important cause. JFI, a nationally recognized leader in youth and young adult suicide awareness and prevention, is dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for the prevention of suicide.
According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2022 alone, over 49,000 people in the United States lost their lives to suicide. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for continued efforts to address this issue. Suicide is currently the third leading cause of death among middle and high school-aged youth.
The CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary & Trends Report: 2013–2023 provides valuable insights into behaviors and experiences that contribute to leading causes of death among high school students. This report includes information on mental well-being, which is crucial in understanding and addressing suicide prevention.

In 2023, the report revealed that 40% of all high school students reported experiencing a "persistent feeling of sadness or hopelessness." Additionally, 20% of high school students seriously considered attempting suicide, while 9% attempted it one or more times. These statistics highlight the importance of talking about suicide and suicidal ideation as a means of promoting mental health awareness and potentially saving lives.
Suicide Prevention Month serves as a reminder to honor those affected by suicide, raise awareness about this pressing issue, and focus on prevention efforts. It is also an opportunity to reach out to those who have been personally impacted by suicide and connect individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts to professional counselors and treatment services for support.
The Jason Foundation offers various ways for individuals to get involved in this cause. Their website features a "How to Get Involved" tab with resources on how people can make a difference during Suicide Prevention Month. There is also a special section dedicated specifically to this month.
As we continue our efforts to prevent suicide and support those affected by it, let us remember the importance of open and honest conversations about mental health. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.
